College and High School: Differences Between Academic Writing

The life of an average college student varies much from the life he or she had during high school. In high school, students have to follow strict guidelines of rules and regulations. They have a six to eight hours school schedule where teachers prepare the lesson plan and guide students on how to set priorities. A college or university student is aged 18+ and is an adult, which means he has to take responsibilities for his actions and set his own priorities. He or she has the freedom to set his own schedule and decide which classes to attend. Apart from these, another factor that causes a huge difference between college and high school life is the academic writing.
Many students have a hard time coping with college life because of the difficulty in college curriculum. Most of the student, even those students who previously in high school were high achievers have trouble adjusting to the high standards of college education. Students who used to earn high praise from their teachers on their brilliant term papers lag behind in their dissertations and theses.
Writing dissertations, theses or any kind of research paper is an integral part of college education. College curriculum introduces dissertation writing to students so that they can learn to pose an argument, a key feature of college writing. To become successful dissertation writers, students should learn to analyze a reading, make a claim about it and support that claim with strong evidence. A research paper or dissertations are an integral part of college education so during the four or five years a student spends in college, most of his time will be spent on reading, gathering information, analyzing it, coming to a successful conclusion and then presenting it to readers so that they may assess it.
This type of careful analyses of a topic is generally not learnt during a student's tenure in high school. So when such an assignment falls in their lap, students are at a lost as to what to do with it. Students are taught the importance of research writing not so that they can aspire to become scholars but because when they enter their professional lives, every occupation they chose will demand they put their ideas in words, analyze them, make complex decisions based on them and then present those ideas to the stake holders.
Very few beginners have the ability to grasp the complexity of an academic paper like dissertation in the first attempt. However, with practice, diligence and the drive to learn, students can make themselves experienced researchers in no great time!
Sidny Adams provides tips to college students who aspire to become dedicated academic or dissertation writers!
